Dexter on CBS

This is just utterly cool. I think.

I just started watching Dexter because of the lack of new shows coming on. Now, thanks to the lack of new shows coming on (thanks to the WGA strikes), CBS is digging in and pulling Dexter over from Showtime.

Here's the quick synopsis for those of you who don't know what I'm talking about: Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall from Six Feet Under) is a forensic analyst for the Miami Police Department. He's got a sister, a girlfriend with two kids, and lots of coworkers who all think he's a swell guy. The only problem is, they don't know that Dexter is a serial killer. And he's real good at what he does. Luckily for them, Dexter only kills people who deserve it.

It doesn't get more antihero than that, does it? And trust me, that's just the 15-second summary...it gets way more messed up.

While CBS bringing this show to the masses is great news for people who have never seen it on Showtime, those of us who have seen the made-for-pay-cable version of the show will probably be turned off. I've tried watching The Sopranos on A&E and The Wire on BET, and those just don't hold up at all after all the editing.

The one thing I can say Dexter has going for it is that probably only the language will be edited, because gore-wise, it's not any worse than the CSI clones.

I highly recommend checking this show out when it comes on CBS Feb. 17, especially if you're into the crime dramas. It's kind of a fresh angle...instead of the "let's solve a crime in an hour every week" formula, it's more like a "let's cut a bad guy into pieces in an hour every week" kind of affair. But if you get into it, I'd check the first two seasons out, uncut, on DVD.

Jerry Hayes has seen it and says he thinks it's a weird show, but he didn't say he didn't like it either.
